Altec Lansing GT50515.1 Surround Sound Speakers in great condition, along with the
rare SRS Wow Thing!
.
These speakers have a unique design where front and rear surround speakers are paired together in the left and right units, with directional positioning to create the surround effect. So total 3+1 speaker units containing 5.1 driver speakers.
This was likely the last model Altec Lansing made for computers before exiting that market. For my money, these sound better when playing music than all Logitech speakers except the high-end z9xx series.
The Altec Lansing speakers in themselves are great at playing music, but wait till you use these with the SRS Wow Thing! If you don't know what the SRS Wow Thing! is, it's the hardware version of the sound processing that Microsoft eventually acquired and integrated into Windows Media Player (SRS effect panel).
The SRS Wow device is almost 19 years old, and given its age it's still in surprising good working condition. When the volume knob is moved to 90% and above, touching it causes crackle in the sound, but no issues when you don't touch it. The on-off-bypass switches also cause crackle sometimes, but again only when you touch those. Generally once it's configured to your taste, it processes sound without any issues. The Altec Lansing speakers certainly benefits from the SRS sound processing, but some other speakers might not benefit from it as much.
Combined, these two produce amazing music to my ears, likely in the same league as Logitech Z906 (except the bass may not be as tight). Logitech Z906 costs 0!
