Description
A beautifully preserved piece of Earth's ancient history, (late Cretaceous), it's "Ammolite" shell intact and flashing the full spectrum of colors. Encased in a clear epoxy shell, it can now be handled without fear of crumbling.I thought it might be useful in a classroom as a teachers aid, but it also would be a nice addition to any Fossil collection. Measures: 3.5" x 1.5" x 1" weighs 5.2 oz
The shells of some Baculites and Ammonites can actually transform (under certain conditions) into a prized gemstone called "Ammolite" which can be quite valuable.
What is Ammolite?
Fossil Baculites/Ammonites
Both Baculites and Ammonites are extinct mollusks related to the modern squid, octopus and Chambered Nautilus. Under certain conditions related to fossilization, the nacreous shell becomes highly iridescent; the resulting gemlike material is called "ammolite."
