Famous Genuine Whitby Snakestone
Lower Jurassic
Kettleness, nr. Whitby, North Yorkshire, UK
Legend has it that when St. Hilda took up residency in the Whitby Abbey
, she found it overrun with snakes. So, she cast a spell to throw them over the cliffs, turning them to the stone ammonites found there. Since the middle ages, craftsmen have carved snake heads on these ammonites found in the cliffs near Whitby and sold them to pilgrims. This is one is a genuine ammonite from the cliffs that has a snake head carved to celebrate those ancient artifacts. It’s about 45 mm in diameter.
