    Description

Description:   Orthoceras means straight horn. They were marine animals that lived about 400 million years ago. Commonly found in limestone. They are an ancestor to the squid. In order to swim they filled their chambers, also called septas, with air. Then release jets of water to propel themselves through the water. Not only did they swim but they also crawled along the ocean floor. Their shells fell to the ocean floor when they died. After years of sediment covering them they transformed into stone.
