Baculites are a genus of cephalapods that originated in the  late Paleozoic Era  and became extinct at the end of the Cretareous Period along with the dinosaurs, A relative of the ammonite and modern squid,  Baculites shells were straight and compressed like a tapering rod,  except for a few coils in the back. If preservation conditions are correct,  the shell, which is made of alternating layers of aragonite and conchiolin , becomes fossilized.
