Description
For purchase is A Vietnam War Ontario Knife U.S. 18 inch Machete. This 'barn find' was in a wood crate with it's customized canvas sheath. Please Examine all 9 photos with this listing. Enlarge/ zoom to your satisfaction before purchase. The below information itemizes machete, and carry sheath separately.-18 inch Ontario Knife Co. U.S. steel blade machete. Total length with handle is 23 approximately 23 1/2 inches. The approximate weight of blade (without sheath) is 1 pound 4 ounces. This iconic Vietnam War artifact is definitely used. The blade has stains, and some surface rust and minor pitting. It looks like the blade was machine sharpened during it's lifetime. The cutting edge is 'razor' sharp. There are some minor chips in the cutting edge. You will have to zoom to see them. There are no cracks anywhere on this Machete and it maintains it's structural integrity.
- The 4 rivet black handle was wrapped in old cloth electrical tape. Probably for a better grip in a sweaty hand. I unwrapped and removed this tape to check for damage to the handle, and the integrity of the 4 rivets. There are no cracks in the handle, and it is solid. The 4 rivets are all present and they are in still 'tight' with no blade wobble. They cloth tape I removed has lost its adhesive quality over the years, but I'll include it in the shipping box. There is another length of black cloth tape affixed to the loophole in the handle. I think it was used as a wrist band fastener when swinging the Machete..
- A personally customized sheath (carry case) for the Machete. This soft canvas case is marked
WE 'CHOP CHOP' CHARLIE
. Also affixed to the same side is the patch of the 25th Infantry Division. The reverse (the outside) of sheath is a Graphic Short timers Calendar ! It is marked
'RATMAN' IS SHORT
. The letters in
SHORT
are marked with 100 hash marks (I counted them). Under the T is 100.
FREEDOM
. To the right of that is the image of a jet airplane. That would be the 'Freedom Bird' that flew GI,s home after their tour in Vietnam. The tour was generally 12-13 months. As the GI's reached their last 100 days they were referred to as 'short timers' . Many counted down the days by marking off each day down to 'ZERO'. Looks like 'RATMAN made it. This sheath is in very good condition with use, and age related wear. All 5 of the metal rivets are present. There is a length of paracord tied around the canvas belt loop. There are minor stains, snags, and holes but the overall integrity, and graphic appeal make this offering a one of a kind Vietnam War collectable relic.
